KANGPOKPI: The mortal remains of Jangkhongam Hangshing a village volunteer belonging to the Kuki-Zo community was laid to rest on Monday at the Martyrs’ Cemetery in Phaijang Motbung.
Hangshing (39) of Lhouthang Village, Tamenglong District, Manipur, was reportedly killed on 13 June 2026 during an area patrol conducted by Kuki-Zo Village Volunteers near Lasan Village in Kangpokpi District. According to community sources, he lost his life during an armed encounter involving ZUF-K (Kamson Group) and NSCN-IM.
The burial programme was organized by the Committee on Tribal Unity (COTU) under the leadership of Joint Secretary Lamminlun Singsit. The service commenced with an invocation prayer led by Pastor Thanggin Vaiphei.
During the programme, Hangshin’s wife, son, and other family members shared heartfelt messages of gratitude, thanking all those who stood by the family and extended support during their time of grief.
Representatives of Kuki Inpi Manipur and Sadar Hills Chiefs’ Association also delivered brief addresses, emphasizing the importance of responsible use of social media and cautioning against content that fuels hatred and division. They urged the public to remain vigilant and promote peace and unity.

As a mark of respect and appreciation for his sacrifice and service to the community, Deputy Chief Minister Nemcha Kipgen, Saitu MLA Haokholet Kipgen, and Saikul MLA Kimneo Hangshing presented a traditional shawl to the deceased.
The ceremony also included a condolence tribute and gun salute by the Kuki-Zo Village Volunteers (KZVV), followed by a one-minute silence in honour of the fallen volunteer.
The burial service was led by Rev. Thangsat Kipgen, Minister and Convenor of the COTU Prayer Cell, who concluded the programme with the final prayer.
