AGARTALA: More than 4 years after police intercepted a truck carrying 260 kg of concealed ganja at Churaibari Naka, the Additional Sessions Judge Court No. 2 in Dharmanagar, North Tripura district, on Tuesday convicted Manjoor Ahamed Chachi and sentenced him to 12 years of rigorous imprisonment.
It is learned that Chachi, son of Md. Jalal Uddin Chachi and a resident of Katyanwali in Baramulla, Jammu and Kashmir, was also fined Rs 1,50,000. In default of payment, he faces an additional 6 months of rigorous imprisonment.
The conviction falls under section 20(B)(II)(C)/29 of the NDPS Act, in connection with SPL (NDPS) case number 30/2022, which arose out of Churaibari police station case number 02/2022 registered under section 20(b)(ii)(c) of the same act.

According to Tripura Police officials, the case dates back to the morning of February 1, 2022, when a special vehicle checking drive was underway at Churaibari Naka point. Police intercepted the truck during the drive and found the ganja hidden inside it, after which Chachi, the driver, was arrested.
Meanwhile, a chargesheet against the accused was submitted on July 31, 2022, following a thorough investigation by Sub-Inspector Ajit Kanti Chakma, then posted at Churaibari police station. Chakma now serves as Inspector at Amtali police station under West Tripura district.
The trial court found the accused guilty and sentenced him accordingly.
