The Indigenous Tribal Leaders’ Forum (ITLF) in a statement on June 21 said, “After enduring over a year of state-sponsored ethnic cleansing, the movement for a Separate Administration in Manipur has reached a critical juncture. Following the conclusion of the Lok Sabha election, the central government is preparing to lay the groundwork for a ceasefire, while the Meitei state government pursues its own agenda.”
In response, the ITLF is organizing a mass rally on Monday, June 24, 2024, to expedite their political demand for a Union Territory with a legislature under Article 239(A) of the Indian Constitution. The rally ITLF said, aims to remind the central government of the realities on the ground – that it is no longer possible for the tribal population to live in dignity under what the ITLF termed is a “Meitei government.”
The Suspension of Operation (SoO) groups, ITLF also said have already submitted their political demand, seeking a Union Territory with legislative powers. In support of this demand, the call to a “nonviolent protest rally”, on Monday ITLF said is to ensure that their combined voices are heard by the central government.
The rally, as per a press release on June 22, commence at 11 a.m. from the Lamka Public Ground and conclude at Peace Ground, Tuibong.
Urging the general public to actively participate in this peaceful rally to advocate for their political solution, ITLF said the total shutdown will be observed on the day of the rally, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., with exemptions for those taking examinations and emergency services such as fire, medical, electric, and water services.
A similar nonviolent protest rally is being held in Kangpokpi headquarters organised by Committee on Tribal Unity, a Kuki-Zo civil body.
