UKHRUL: The Kuki Inpi Manipur (KIM), the apex body of the Kuki tribes, on Tuesday announced the immediate withdrawal of the ongoing economic blockade in Kuki-Zo inhabited areas after receiving assurances from the government regarding the supply of foodgrains and other essential commodities.
In a press statement issued from its Lamka headquarters, KIM said the decision was taken in good faith following the government’s commitment to ensure the delivery of foodgrains and basic necessities to affected areas. The organisation expressed hope that the authorities would act promptly to address the hardships faced by residents in Kangpokpi district and adjoining regions.
KIM urged the government and concerned agencies to ensure the uninterrupted movement and distribution of essential items, including foodgrains, fuel and medicines, within the next 48 hours. It maintained that the blockade was lifted with the expectation that the assurances given by the authorities would be honoured without delay.
The apex Kuki body noted that Kuki-Zo communities have been facing prolonged shortages and difficulties due to disruptions in the supply of essential commodities. It said the decision to suspend the blockade was intended to facilitate relief for the affected population while providing the government an opportunity to fulfil its commitments.
At the same time, KIM cautioned that if the promised supplies fail to reach the affected areas within the stipulated period, the Kuki-Zo people may be compelled to adopt appropriate measures to protect their rights and ensure their survival and dignity.
Stating that access to food, medicines and other basic necessities is a fundamental humanitarian requirement, KIM asserted that such supplies should not be delayed, obstructed or subjected to political considerations under any circumstances.

KIM further said that responsibility for any continued scarcity or failure in the supply chain would rest with the government and the authorities concerned.
The announcement comes amid ongoing efforts to restore normalcy in the hill districts, where concerns over shortages of essential commodities have remained a major issue in recent weeks, especially in Kangpokpi District.
