Liangmai Naga body condemns revocation of Free Movement Regime, Border Fencing

Published on

Ukhrul, March 14: The Liangmai Naga Katimai Ruangdi (LNKR), Manipur, has strongly objected to the Central Government’s decision to revoke the Free Movement Regime (FMR) and construct border fencing in Naga-inhabited areas along the Indo-Myanmar border. The organization has termed the decision as a blatant disregard for the rights and interests of the Naga people and has vowed to oppose it vehemently.

The LNKR also criticized Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s statement on March 1, 2025, wherein he called for an accelerated fencing process along the Indo-Myanmar border. The organization labeled the statement as “insensitive” and indicative of the government’s disregard for the concerns and rights of indigenous communities residing in the border regions.

The Free Movement Regime has historically allowed Naga people to cross the border freely, maintaining strong cultural, social, and economic ties with their kin on both sides. The LNKR stressed that revoking this policy would severely disrupt the daily lives of the Naga population, leading to social and economic hardships.

Furthermore, the organization denounced the border fencing project as an attempt to divide and fragment the Naga people, posing a threat to their ancestral lands and traditional territories. According to LNKR, such actions could heighten tensions in the region and contribute to instability rather than resolving existing challenges.

In light of these concerns, the LNKR has urged the Central Government to reconsider its decision and engage in meaningful consultations with the Naga people before proceeding further. The organization has called for the respect and acknowledgment of Naga rights, interests, and historical connections across the border.
