Manipur HC directs Chief Secy to submit report on relief measures, injured students in security crackdown

Imphal: The High Court of Manipur on Friday directed Manipur Chief Secretary Vineet Joshi to submit a report within one week detailing the actions taken to provide immediate relief to the injured students and others who were affected during a security crackdown in the recent agitations seeking justice for two deceased students.

The High Court bench of Justice A Bimol Singh and Justice A Guneshwar Sharma issued the direction in response to a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by Retired Judge A Noutuneshwari.

During the hearing, representatives of the respondents in the PIL, including the Government of India, Home Affairs, Manipur Government, Manipur Security Advisor, DGP Manipur, and SP Imphal West, were present.

However, there was no representation from the 16th Jat Regiment.

As a result, the Court ordered that steps be taken within a week to address the issue, and the petitioner was instructed to file an affidavit as proof of service of such notice.

In the meantime, the High Court bench directed the Chief Secretary to submit a report outlining the relief measures that have been implemented. The next hearing on the PIL is scheduled for October 19.

Several students were injured in the recent agitations on September 26 to 29 and some even sustained critical pellet gun wounds due to the excessive use of force by security personnel, which the security forces has denied.
