Mizoram Indigenous Games Wrap Up, Aizawl District Takes Top Honors

Agartala, Mar 23: The Doordarshan Mizoram Indigenous Games 2024-25 came to an exhilarating conclusion at Chaltlang Field in Aizawl, where athletes from across Mizoram competed fiercely in traditional sporting events. The competition not only highlighted raw strength and skill but also reinforced the importance of preserving Mizo heritage.

Organized jointly by Broadcasting Infrastructure & Network Development (BIND) and the Mizoram Indigenous Games Association (MIGA), the event showcased a vibrant display of Indigenous sports. C. Lalremsiama, Secretary of MIGA and Programme Executive of DDK Aizawl presided over the closing ceremony. Sports & Youth Services Minister Lalnghinglova Hmar graced the occasion as the chief guest and lauded the organizers for successfully conducting a statewide competition. He emphasized that such events play a vital role in keeping traditional sports alive and inspiring younger generations to embrace their cultural roots.

The games, which began on February 20 in Serchhip, were held across all districts of Mizoram, with over 2,290 athletes from 131 Young Mizo Association (YMA) branches taking part. The men competed in Insaihruipawh (individual tug of war), Insuknawr (rod pushing), Inarpathai, and Inbuan (traditional wrestling), while the women participated in Inkawibah.

Dampui from Mamit District emerged victorious in the women’s Inkawibah competition. In the men’s Insuknawr, Zoramthara from Champhai district won the heavyweight category, while ST Lalramchhana from Lawngtlai clinched the middleweight title. Lalthapuia from Aizawl secured first place in the lighter-weight division.

In Inbuan, Lalsangliana from Aizawl won the heavyweight title, Lalrinzuala from Kolasib topped the middleweight category, and Melvin Zothankima from Aizawl triumphed in the lighter weight division. Meanwhile, in Insaihruipawh, Lalruatfela from Aizawl claimed the heavyweight title, TBC Lalmuanzuala from Khawzawl won the middleweight category, and Roland Lalnunsanga from Saitual secured first place in the lighter weight division. Chaltlang, Aizawl emerged as the champion in Inarpathai.

Aizawl district dominated the competition, securing 16 medals to be crowned the overall champion. Saitual district finished second, while Kolasib took third place. The first-place winners received a cash prize of Rs. 50,000, followed by Rs. 30,000 for second place and Rs. 15,000 for third.
