AIZAWL (SHABD): Zoram Medical College & Hospital (ZMC&H) successfully performed its first-ever open-heart surgery on a 69-year-old male patient who had suffered a heart attack six months ago and was diagnosed with Triple Vessel Disease, one of the most serious forms of heart disease.
The complex procedure lasted six and a half hours and was led by ZMC&H cardiothoracic surgeon Dr. Mary Hmingthantluangi, alongside visiting specialist Dr. Intekhab Alam from Apollo Excel Hospital, Guwahati.
During the high-stakes operation, the surgical team used a heart-lung machine to temporarily take over the functions of the heart while bypassing three blocked arteries. Surgeons used the patient’s own saphenous vein from the leg and the internal mammary artery (LIMA) from the chest to restore blood flow.
The surgery was supported by the ZMC&H anaesthesiology team and cardiologist Dr. Lalthafala, who monitored the patient throughout the procedure. Following the successful operation, the patient was shifted to the ICU for post-operative care.
Dr. Intekhab Alam praised the ZMC&H surgical, nursing and anaesthesiology teams for their thorough preparation and professionalism. Hospital authorities and the patient’s family expressed their profound gratitude to the medical team for this life-saving achievement.
