AIZAWL (SHABD): Mizoram has urged the Centre to extend greater support for tribal development programmes in the state, an official statement said on Thursday.
Mizoram Minister of State Lalnghinglova Hmar, who holds the portfolios of Sports, Tourism, Labour, Employment and Skill Development, and Excise, met Union Tribal Affairs Minister Jual Oram in New Delhi on Wednesday. During the meeting, the two leaders discussed a range of development initiatives that could be implemented in Mizoram through the Ministry of Tribal Affairs, the statement said.
Noting that more than 90 per cent of Mizoram’s population belongs to Scheduled Tribes, Hmar said the state deserves focused attention from the Ministry.

“Mizoram is a small state with limited financial resources, but we aspire to progress on par with the rest of the country. While we are making every possible effort, we need the Centre’s support to achieve our developmental goals,” Hmar was quoted as saying in the statement.
He also submitted proposals seeking assistance for tribal youth, particularly in the fields of education and sports.
Oram assured the Mizoram minister that the Ministry would examine the proposals and explore ways to extend support. He also appreciated the developmental initiatives undertaken by the Mizoram government.
The Union Minister further accepted Hmar’s invitation to visit Mizoram and said he intends to attend one of the state’s festivals later this year, the statement added.
