Shillong, June 7: The Jaintia National Council (JNC), Khliehriat Circle, marked World Food Safety Day by launching surprise inspections across food stalls, hotels, and restaurants in Khliehriat village on Saturday. The initiative aimed to assess hygiene standards and raise awareness about the importance of safe food practices in the community.
Led by General Secretary Symboh Baiar Sumer, the inspection team found multiple establishments operating under unhygienic conditions, with several kitchens falling short of basic cleanliness requirements. The council warned that such negligence could pose serious health risks and contribute to the spread of foodborne illnesses.

In particular, concerns were raised over the impact on students and young consumers who frequent these eateries. The council reminded food vendors that access to clean and safe food is not only a necessity but a responsibility.
Emphasizing the need for consistent standards, the JNC urged the local Food Safety Officer’s office to carry out routine checks to prevent future lapses and ensure ongoing compliance with health regulations.

Concluding the drive, the council issued a strong warning to all non-compliant establishments, stating that failure to maintain proper hygiene would result in strict action.
