SHILLONG: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma said that violence in Garo Hills has subsided and everyday life is fast returning to normal, though the government is maintaining a close watch to prevent flare-ups.

Speaking to reporters after meeting Governor C.H. Vijayashankaron Thursday, Sangma said violence has decreased, with only “some sporadic incidents” occurring occasionally.

“Normalcy has returned to a large extent, and people are now getting on with their day-to-day lives. After assessing the situation, the internet ban has been lifted. However, we are carefully monitoring the situation and keeping a close watch to ensure normalcy,” he said.

Sangma said he had briefed the Governor on the prevailing situation in the Garo Hills region following violent protests against non-tribal participation in the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council elections, which was recently revoked.

“For most of the last two weeks, I was in Garo Hills. During this period, we remained in touch with the Governor over the phone. I felt it was appropriate to meet him in person and brief him on the current situation in Garo Hills, as well as the incidents that led to the recent law and order situation,” he said.

He was accompanied by the Deputy Chief Minister in charge of Home, Prestone Tynsong.

“A complete briefing on the entire matter was given to the Governor,” he said, adding that the Governor is now fully aware of what has happened.

On arrests linked to the recent unrest, Sangma said it is a matter for the police.

“Regarding the arrests, we have been very clear that it is purely the responsibility of the Police department. Based on available evidence and applicable rules, the police will take action. I am not aware of how many arrests have been made or who has been arrested, as it is entirely a police matter. The police are taking steps as per law and evidence. The SP concerned will be in a position to respond,” he said.
