Imphal: Another loaded truck fell into the same gorge at Chakumai area of Tadubi along NH-2 in Senapati district where an occupant of the loaded truck was killed, while another occupant was missing on Sunday morning. Reports said one of the killed persons must be either the driver of the truck or the handyman.

Meanwhile, alleging negligence on the part of the authorities manning the highway, locals imposed a snap bandh along the highway which was lifted later after a talk with the officials of the concerned authorities.

The Imphal-bound loaded truck coming from the Dimapur side met with the tragic accident after skidding off the road and fell into the gorge today morning, around 6 am, according to reports. One of the occupants of the truck bearing registration no. NL01-3262 died instantly at the spot, the reports said.

Police who rushed to the spot retrieved the lifeless body of the occupant. The details of the ill-fated driver and the handyman are yet to be known. The police are also yet to ascertain if there were other occupants in the truck.

The tragic incident occurred at a time when the handyman of a loaded truck that fell down into the same gorge on May 12 is yet to be traced, amid the fear of death. The driver of that truck was killed in the May 12 road mishap.

Alleging negligence on the part of the authorities manning the highway behind the frequent accidents in the area, a snap bandh was imposed on the stretch of the highway. The bandh was jointly imposed by Mao Truck Drivers’ Union and Mao Youth Organization with the support of other civil society organisations and students’ bodies, the reports also said. They alleged that the frequent accidents at the site were due to negligence on the part of the concerned authorities while claiming that lives of as many as 30 people lost in the vehicle accidents at the same site in the last two years.

The protestors also recalled the accident of an inter-state bus that fell into the same gorge in 2017.

Meanwhile, the bandh was, however, lifted after a talk with MLA Losii Dikho and MLA N Kayisii who visited the accident site today.
