UKHRUL: R Praggnanandhaa pulled off an incredible comeback and made history by becoming the first Indian to win the prestigious Norway Chess title on Friday.
Competing in Norway Chess only for the second time Praggnanandhaa had a slow start but gained momentum towards the second half. He began the final round in second place with 15 points then secured a classical win worth three full points to finish on 18 points and win the title.
In his campaign he defeated world number 1 and seven-time champion, Norwegian grandmaster Magnus Carlson twice in classical chess during the tournament, becoming only the second player to achieve this feat after India’s legendry Viswanathan Anand.
Prime minister Narendra Modi congratulating Praggnanandhaa’s win took to X stating, “This is indeed a remarkable milestone that highlights his continued excellence.” The prime minister also wished him success in his future endeavours.
