AGARTALA: Two applicants from North Tripura district have officially been granted Indian citizenship under the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA), while over 20 other applications remain under evaluation via a completely digital verification process, a senior administrative official confirmed.
Speaking to the media persons, Census Director Ratan Biswas, who also chairs the state-level empowered committee, said, “We have received a total of 24 applications through the portal, out of which two certificates have been issued, and another is ready for clearance.”
He confirmed that the beneficiaries include Jhalak Das Chowdhury and Sima Rani Banik. Following the announcement, Chowdhury met with the North Tripura District Magistrate to complete subsequent Aadhaar card formalities.
Administrative sources revealed that the entire process operates under a strict zero-offline protocol. Applications submitted via the Ministry of Home Affairs portal undergo multi-layered screenings by district-level committees, headed by the Superintendent of Posts, before reaching the state committee.

“There is no manual or physical concept here; everything is managed through the online system,” Biswas added, noting that digital certificates are sent directly to the applicants via email and mobile.
Out of six applications that recently reached the final stage, three were sent back to the district level for re-evaluation due to inconsistencies, while the remaining three advanced to the state committee for final approval.
Meanwhile, the administrative rollout continues amid legal contexts, as several indigenous organizations previously filed petitions in the Supreme Court against the law.
However, to safeguard the social, cultural, and demographic interests of tribal communities, the state’s Sixth Schedule autonomous district council areas remain strictly exempted from the purview of the CAA.
