UKHRUL: Strongly condemning what it termed a ‘coordinated armed assault on Mongkot Chepu,’ the Kuki CSO Working Committee, Ukhrul, has sought special attention from the Chief Minister of Manipur, Chief Secretary, Director Manipur Police, Security Advisor to the Government of Manipur, Director General of Police (DGP), Deputy Commissioner (DC), and the Superintendent of Police (SP), Ukhrul District.

In a press statement, the civil body condemned what it terms as a coordinated and indiscriminate armed assault launched upon the civilian settlement of Mongkot Chepu on the evening of 26th May 2026, further exposing the alarming vulnerability of Kukl-Zo habitations in the fringe areas of Ukhrul and Kamjong districts.
“Beginning at approximately 6:48 PM, civilian settlements of Mongkot Chepu came under a sustained attack from three directions: Leingangching (S. Laho), armed positions operating from the vicinity of Litan Sareikhong- Tangkhul Police station, and the Sikibung-Lilen Ridge. The assault persisted with the use of mortars and other sophisticated weapons until approximately 11:08 PM, subjecting innocent civilians to prolonged terror and grave insecurity,” it stated.
The Kuki body, while stating that the attack was not the first, emphasized that the repeated targeting of civilian settlements reflects a dangerous pattern of emboldened aggression and systemic security failure. “How long will vulnerable populations be expected to survive under recurring siege while security measures remain limited in their effectiveness against organised armed aggression? The responsibility squarely rests upon the State to equip and empower the Security Forces with an unambiguous operational mandate, free of political constraints, to decisively secure civilian habitations and prevent further escalation,” it said.

The civil body also stated that the continued silence and inertia of the Government of Manipur and the Government of India are deeply disturbing and asked what exactly the authorities are writing for. “Must the Kuki-Zo population of Ukhrul and Kamjong face complete annihilation before meaningful action is taken?” it further queried.
The Ukhrul-based Kuki body further stated that if the Government is unable to guarantee even minimum security to vulnerable Kuki civilians, it must state so with honesty and facilitate effective alternative arrangements. “What is utterly indefensible, however, is remaining silent, passive, and administratively paralysed while civilian settlements repeatedly come under coordinated armed assault. Governance cannot remain mute in the face of organised violence,” the body said.

“The growing perception that organised armed aggression against the minority Kuki-Zos is tolerated while institutional force is disproportionately asserted upon vulnerable minority communities risks severely eroding public trust in the neutrality and credibility of the State. If this neglect persists, the day may not be far when the Government is seen distributing ballistic vests and helmets to endangered civilians. Instead of securing their constitutional right to life and safety, it would represent a profound failure of governance and a matter of national disgrace,” the press note concluded.
