IMPHAL: Even as Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to visit Assam on April 6, the United Naga Council (UNC), the apex Naga body in Manipur, has drawn the attention of the former on the “infiltration of illegal immigrants in Northeast India”.
“We, the undersigned, bring to your notice a pressing concern regarding the issue of infiltration of illegal immigrants in Manipur and other North East states”, said the UNC in a memorandum addressed to the Prime Minister.
“While we appreciate your vocal stance on this issue during your visits to Assam, we are concerned about the perceived silence on this matter when you visit other Northeast states, particularly Manipur”, the Naga body also stated. It stated that a uniform approach is essential to address this issue, which affects the demographic balance and poses a threat to the identity and rights of indigenous communities across the region.

The UNC then said the influx of illegal immigrants has significant demographic, social, and economic implications for the people of Manipur and the entire Northeast region, posing challenges during the census and delimitation process, which could alter the representation of indigenous communities in the region. “We urge the Central Government to take immediate and effective measures to identify and deport illegal immigrants and to provide necessary support and relief to the affected communities.
The UNC also urged the Prime Minister to place a viable mechanism to check the influx of illegal immigrants in the state through rule of law, like updation of NRC and constitution of Population Commission.

The UNC then said it believes that a uniform yardstick is necessary to address this issue and salvage the interests of native and indigenous peoples. “We request your intervention to ensure that the concerns of the people are addressed and a comprehensive policy is put in place to tackle the problem”, it added.
The UNC memorandum then concluded by saying, “We would like to bring this issue to your attention during your visit to Assam on April 6, 2026, and seek your assurance for necessary action”.
