Valley based miscreants shoot cows from Tangkhul Irong village; forest fire nearly burns villages

Senapati: The chief of Irong Ato (upper Irong), a Tangkhul village under Island Block reported that 5 cows from the village have gone missing after valley based miscreants while passing the village coming from Heinganglok on Monday.

The village chief, S Shangkahao’s information corroborated by a village member said 2 cows were shot dead and taken away in the vehicle the miscreants came from, while 3 cows are still missing.

The villagers also informed that the valley miscreants in large number came in many Shaktiman trucks, Gypsys and bikes to set Kuki tribal houses ablaze.

At least 15 villages in the area, namely, S. Elimphai, Selhao Vaiphei, Phainom, Phowaibi, Ngoubikhong Vaiphei, S. Cannan, Nongpok Center, B. Phainom, Heinoupokpi, S. Salimphai, Horton Vaiphei, Haukhongching, Nongmaiching tampak, Selhao Vaiphei Island Block, Saikul, PS. Shikhong Sekmai were all torched. Some of the villages were already abandoned villages, villagers told.

S. Elimphai villagers had abandoned their village on May 3 when the ethnic violence was triggered, sources added. Irong Ato village is situated about 1 km from S. Elimphai village.

Since the miscreants even set the forest on fire, nearby Tangkhul villages Irong Ato and Sada Lungthar had a hard time controlling the fire. The forest fire was doused near the Tangkhul village settlements, a villager informed.

Under Island Block in Senapati district, there are a number of Tangkhul village settlements such as Sada Lungtha, Irong Ato, Irong Aze, Heinganglok, Shomrei, Leihaoram, Kharan, Ringpam, Marryland among others.
