CHURACHANDPUR: Dengue, a viral disease transmitted through mosquito bites, has claimed its first victim in Churachandpur district this year. A 13-year-old Class VI student from Valveng, New Lamka, died yesterday after developing a high fever on his way to school. He was rushed to Churachandpur District Hospital, where he died before receiving treatment.
The body was buried today at the New Lamka Cemetery.
Following the death of the 13-year-old boy, the Malaria Department undertook fogging using a thermal fogging machine in the Valveng area of New Lamka to check the further spread of the disease, which is transmitted by mosquitoes.
Meanwhile, the threat of the dengue virus in Churachandpur has become alarming, with 22 new dengue-positive cases reported by the concerned department today alone, taking the total number of positive cases this year to 752. This is a sharp increase compared to 332 cases reported last year, raising concerns over a possible dengue outbreak in the district, according to sources.

The Malaria Department of Churachandpur also appealed to the public to regularly use mosquito nets and prevent water stagnation in and around their homes and neighbourhoods, where dengue-carrying mosquitoes breed. It stressed that containing the further spread of the dengue virus would require a collective effort.
It may be mentioned that dengue symptoms usually begin four to 10 days after a mosquito bite and may include sudden high fever, severe headache, pain behind the eyes, and intense muscle, joint or bone pain. Mild cases may also cause nausea, vomiting, swollen glands and skin rashes, among other symptoms.
