UKHRUL: The Naga Students’ Union Delhi (NSUD) has expressed profound grief over the passing of its former President, Ngathingkhui Max Phazang, a pioneering student leader and retired officer of the Manipur Judicial Service. He passed away on 2 July 2026 at the age of 75 after a prolonged battle with lung cancer.
Phazang, son of Late Shangkatit Phazang and a native of Pharung Village, served as President of NSUD during the 1972–73 tenure. As one of the Union’s earliest presidents, he belonged to a pioneering generation of leaders whose vision, dedication and selfless service laid the foundation of the organisation during its formative years.
In a condolence message, NSUD described his leadership as one marked by an unwavering commitment to the welfare, unity and collective aspirations of the Naga student community in Delhi. The Union stated that his invaluable contributions have left a lasting imprint on its history and that his legacy will continue to inspire generations of student leaders.
“On behalf of the entire NSUD fraternity, we extend our deepest condolences to his bereaved family and the people of Pharung Village during this time of immense loss. We stand in solidarity with them in their grief and pray that they may find strength, comfort and peace,” the Union said, while expressing gratitude for the enduring legacy he left behind.
A distinguished officer of the Manipur Judicial Service, Phazang retired in 2012 after a career dedicated to public service, leadership and the administration of justice. He was widely respected for his integrity, humility and unwavering commitment to serving society.
He had been battling lung cancer since being diagnosed in October 2024. During the course of his treatment, he received medical care at BLK-Max Super Speciality Hospital, New Delhi, and Medanta Super Speciality Hospital, Noida. He spent his final 42 days in the intensive care unit before succumbing to complications arising from pneumonia and his underlying lung disease. He passed away peacefully at Medanta Super Speciality Hospital on 2 July.

A condolence service in his honour was organised by NSUD at the DWAAR Centre, Safdarjung, on Friday, where members of the Union, well-wishers and members of the Naga community gathered to pay their final respects and celebrate his life of service.
Among those who paid tribute was Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, who expressed his condolences in a post on X. He wrote, “Saddened to learn about the demise of Ngathingkhui Max Phazang father-in-law of my friend, the General Secretary (Political) of NPP, Mmhonlumo Kikon. Phazang was a very active member of the students’ body and continued to serve the community for a very long time.
He was a retired Judicial Magistrate and contributed to society with his expertise as a legal luminary. May God give his family strength and may he Rest In Peace.”
