SENAPATI: Purul village in Manipur witnessed a vibrant convergence of tradition, community effort and cultural pride as the annual Purul (Hiimai) Paoki Festival concluded on Wednesday, drawing large participation from locals, visitors and invited dignitaries.

Held from May 4 to 6, the three-day festival was organised by the Purul Youth & Students’ Organisation (PYSO) with support from the Department of Tourism, Manipur. The event brought together villagers, youth volunteers, security personnel and guests in a collective celebration deeply rooted in agricultural practices.

Among the key invitees were Chief Guest Thaithuilung Pamei, IAS, Commissioner (Agriculture, Sericulture, Horticulture and Soil Conservation); officials from the Department of Tourism, Manipur; representatives of various state departments; neighbouring village authorities; and respected community elders. Personnel from the 16 Assam Rifles were also present at the festival and actively participated in the paddy transplantation alongside villagers, contributing to the collective effort in the fields.

The festival commenced with preparations for a community feast, followed by the uprooting of paddy saplings and arrival of guests on the second day. The final day focused on the transplantation of paddy saplings, locally known as Paobii Payu, where participants worked side by side, moving from one field to another in a spirit of unity and cooperation.

Addressing the gathering, Thaithuilung Pamei said the festival reflects the deep connection between the people and their land, while also underscoring the need to adopt improved agricultural practices to sustain livelihoods. He noted that initiatives such as training programmes and exposure visits are being explored to support farmers.

PYSO President RL Nada Redeem said the festival is not merely about farming, but about preserving traditions and reinforcing shared values passed down through generations. He acknowledged the guidance of village elders and the support extended by various departments and well-wishers.

The festival also stood out for its spirit of hospitality, with villagers serving food to all attendees and offering local produce to guests as a token of goodwill.

A major highlight was the traditional wrestling competition held overnight, which drew enthusiastic crowds. Wrestlers from Purul and nearby villages participated, with Veikholou from Saranamei emerging as the champion.

With participation crossing the thousand mark, the Paoki Festival once again highlighted its significance as a cultural and agricultural event. Recognised as a state tourism festival since 2017, it continues to promote sustainable practices while strengthening community bonds and preserving indigenous heritage.
