UKHRUL: The Jaiñtia National Council (JNC) expressed its sincere appreciation to the East Jaiñtia Hills District Police for their swift and effective action in tracing and rescuing a young woman from Wapung Chnong village who had gone missing in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, since March 15.
The case reportedly came to light after JNC received a verbal complaint from the missing woman’s mother.
JNC filed a First Information Report (FIR) on March 19 at the Ladrymbai Police Outpost, following which the young woman was successfully located with the dedicated efforts of the local police team, under the guidance of the Superintendent of Police, East Jaiñtia Hills. The woman is now safely on her way home.

JNC extended heartfelt gratitude to the police authorities for their tireless work and expressed special thanks to Kong Santa Mary Shylla, MLA of 5-Sutnga Saipung Constituency, for her deep concern and assistance in the case.
However, JNC asserted that the unfortunate incident was a direct result of the state government’s continued neglect of youth employment issues in Jaiñtia Hills.
“Due to lack of job opportunities and employment policies within the state, many young people are compelled to leave home in search of work, often falling prey to unsafe or misleading job offers outside Meghalaya,” JNC said in a statement.

Nangjan Dkhar, vice president of JNC (CEC), alleged that the government has consistently failed to address the need for sustainable employment opportunities for the youths.
“If proper job policies and reservation systems were in place, our young people would not have to migrate and face such risks,” Dkhar alleged, while urging all young people from East Jaiñtia Hills to exercise caution before accepting any job outside the state.
He advised the youths to verify job details, avoid being misled by false promises, and to stay connected to family. He also urged all parents to remain vigilant and guide their children in making informed career decisions.

The JNC reiterated that under its “Save Jaiñtia Mission” launched in 2024, it had submitted five key demands to the government, including a call to enact a policy ensuring job reservation in the private and industrial sector for local youths.
“If this demand had been honored, incidents like this could have been prevented. It is now high time for the government to fulfill our demands and secure the future of our youths, so that such painful experiences do not occur again,” Dkhar added.
