Nomination filing begins for Manipur Lok Sabha seats amidst candidate uncertainty

Imphal: Even as a notification allowing filing of nomination papers for contesting the 18th Lok Sabha from two seats in Manipur was issued on Wednesday, no candidate has filed nomination papers till Thursday.

Except CPI and NPF, no other parties have declared the names of their candidates till date.

CPI is the first party that declared the nomination of Laishram Sotinkumar as the party’s officially nominated candidate for the Inner Manipur Parliamentary constituency. The party had declared its decision ahead of the announcement of the poll schedule by ECI.

The NPF had also declared K Timothy Zimik as its party candidate in the Outer Manipur (reserved) Parliamentary constituency on Wednesday. 

The ECI had announced a seven-phase poll for the 18th Lok Sabha elections with first phase polling on April 19.

The polling in both the parliamentary constituencies in Manipur – Outer Manipur (ST reserved) Parliamentary constituency and Inner Manipur Parliamentary constituency – will go in the first and second phases (April 19 and April 26).

The chief electoral officer (CEO) of Manipur on Wednesday issued the poll notification for both seats was issued on Wednesday (March 20), allowing the filing of nomination papers for candidates till March 27.

Even as the notification was issued, no candidate filed nomination papers till today.

Besides, the BJP and the Congress are yet to declare candidates.

Both parties are expected to announce their candidates in both constituencies shortly.

However, for the Congress, the party is likely to field Alfred K Arthur, a former party MLA to contest the elections from the Outer Manipur Parliamentary seat, pending an official announcement.

Arthur had even started his election campaign in Ukhrul district amid attempts to disturb his campaign by armed miscreants.

The Congress, however, is yet to start its election campaign in the Inner Manipur Parliamentary constituency whichcovers the valley districts of Imphal East, Imphal West and Bishnupur districts.
