Imphal, August 27: On this “solemn occasion” of the 94th Martyrdom Day on August 29, the day Haipou Jadonang was hanged in 1931, the Kamson faction of the Zeliangrong United Front (ZUF) has appealed to all Zeliangrong people residing or settled across Assam, Manipur, and Nagaland to light a candle in the evening. “This simple act of remembrance will symbolize our collective gratitude and respect for his dedication to our cause,” the ZUF-Kamson said.
In a statement issued today, the ZUF said they “gather to pay tribute to the indomitable spirit and unwavering commitment of Haipou Jadonang, a true son of the Zeliangrong community.” His life was a testament to the struggle for justice, peace, and the rights of the Zeliangrong and kindred people, it also said. Haipou Jadonang dedicated his life to advocating for the welfare of his people, making sacrifices that would inspire generations to come, the statement added.

Born in 1905, Haipou Jadonang’s journey was one marked by resilience and dedication, it stated. He emerged as a leader during challenging times, championing the rights of the Zeliangrong community and striving for their recognition and empowerment. “His unwavering resolve resonated with many, and his legacy continues to inspire us today,” the ZUF also said.
Though Haipou Jadonang was hanged on August 29, 1931, on the bank of the Nambul River behind the Imphal Jail at 6 am, one of his most profound sayings, “maakaam mei rui guang tu puni,” encapsulates his belief in the importance of unity, strength, and the collective struggle of the Zeliangrong people. This phrase serves as a rallying cry for all Zeliangrong people to come together in pursuit of a common goal, i.e., the betterment of the community, it added.
Since its formation, the Zeliangrong United Front (ZUF) has been steadfast in following Haipou Jadonang’s footsteps, embodying his vision and principles, it claimed. From day one, the ZUF has worked tirelessly to uphold the rights and dignity of the Zeliangrong people, ensuring that his legacy lives on through their actions and policies, it also said.
