UKHRUL: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) on Monday scripted a record-breaking victory in the Assam Assembly elections, securing 102 out of 126 seats and retaining power for a third consecutive term.
The BJP emerged as the dominant force, winning 82 seats—well above the simple majority mark of 64 and a significant increase from its 60-seat tally in 2021. Its regional allies, the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and Bodoland People’s Front (BPF), contributed 10 seats each, consolidating the NDA’s commanding position in the state assembly.

In contrast, the Indian National Congress (Congress), which contested the elections in alliance with five other parties, suffered a major setback, managing just 19 seats—its worst performance since it was voted out of power in 2016 after a 15-year rule. Among its allies, only the Raijor Dal succeeded in winning a single seat.
Taking responsibility for the party’s poor showing, Congress Assam poll in-charge Bhanwar Jitendra Singh stepped down from his position.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma retained the Jalukbari constituency for a sixth consecutive term and described the victory as a mandate for development and identity. In a post on X, he said, “This victory has been a vote for development, Nari Shakti, identity, and the vision of a Viksit Assam. The huge mandate reflects the mood of the people—from Barak to Brahmaputra and Upper to Lower Assam—who have firmly stood with the narrative of development and identity. Our tireless efforts to place Assam amongst Bharat’s top five states will continue with greater vigour from this day.”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also took to X to thank the people of the state. “The BJP-NDA’s win in the Assam Vidhan Sabha elections illustrates the unwavering support for our alliance’s emphasis on development and bringing a positive difference in people’s lives. I thank my sisters and brothers of Assam for the resounding mandate. I also assured them that we will keep working for the state’s transformation,” he said.
With this decisive mandate, the NDA has further strengthened its political hold in Assam, while the Congress faces the challenge of rebuilding after a significant electoral decline.
