Imphal, June 2: Manipur has been experiencing heavy rainfall for the past six days, and as a result, the water levels in almost all major rivers remain dangerously high. While most rivers are still flowing above the flood level, there is a small sign of relief as the Imphal River has slightly receded.

The latest report from the Relief and Disaster Management Department of Manipur shows the widespread impact of the floods. Due to the overflowing and breaching of the Imphal River and the Iril river, 19,811 people have been affected across various areas. The disaster has damaged 3,365 houses, forced 1,599 people to evacuate, and ruined 11.8 hectares of standing crops. In addition, landslides have been reported at 47 different locations. Despite the scale of the disaster, officials have confirmed that there have been no deaths.

The Water Resources Department reported on Monday that rainfall in the river catchment areas has started to decrease. For example, Kangpokpi recorded 11.50 mm of rainfall by 1 p.m., indicating a possible easing of conditions in the coming days.

The Imphal River and Iril River, both of which flow through the Imphal valley, have caused major problems by overflowing and breaching their banks at several points since Sunday. Local authorities and disaster teams are now working around the clock to repair the damaged riverbanks and control further flooding.

One of the worst-affected places is the Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS) in Porompat, Imphal East. The hospital has been flooded, and as a result, routine operations have been cancelled. Many wards on the ground floor were submerged in floodwater, making it impossible to continue normal medical services.

Emergency teams, including the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), state police, Army personnel, and local volunteers, are continuing the evacuation of patients from the hospital’s flooded ground-floor wards.

Speaking to the media, a hospital official said, “The evacuated patients are being shifted to the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Imphal, and to other nearby district hospitals where they can receive proper care.”
