UKHRUL, May 2: Ukhrul Higher Secondary School (UHSS) held a vibrant felicitation program on Thursday to honor the achievements of its students in the Higher Secondary Examination (HSE). The event was marked by emotional tributes, stellar academic statistics, and a call to action for the community to rethink its perception of government-run educational institutions.
The school’s academic performance this year was highlighted by Chirchomri Rungsung, who emerged as the State Subject Topper in Tangkhul Language. Overall, UHSS students secured four Star marks in the Tangkhul language and a cumulative 40 letter marks across diverse subjects including English, Political Science, Education, Geology, and Alternative English.

The school recorded an overall pass percentage of 75.59%, with the Science stream leading the way at a remarkable 94.29%. The Arts stream followed with 76.82%, while the Commerce stream stood at 30.30%.
Addressing the gathering of students, parents, and community leaders, Principal AS Josiah delivered a stirring speech, emphasizing that the students’ achievements serve as the school’s inspiration.
“Success is a result of self-determination, discipline, hard work, and perseverance. Exam results are not just numerical marks on paper; they are proof that you have worked hard to achieve this,” the Principal said.
Quoting from Proverbs 14:23, “Hard work brings profit, but mere talking about work leads to poverty”, Principal Josiah expressed his gratitude to the parents for their trust and to the staff for their ceaseless work in instilling vision in their students.
The Principal addressed the prevailing trends and mindset that often look down upon government schools. He noted that while village-based government schools like Jessami, Tusom, Somdal, and Talloi achieved a 100% pass rate, UHSS remains highly competitive with private institutions.
“When we look at the percentage side, we have not reached 100, but we are competing with all the private schools. I like to say that government schools are like diamonds. Let us make the best use of the facilities the government provides. Let us change our attitudes,” he encouraged.

The Principal further announced that admissions for the new academic session would begin immediately following the declaration of the HSLC exam results.
Chirchomri Rungsung, the state topper in Tangkhul, in her heartfelt and emotional speech credited her teachers for their unwavering belief in her, stating that the quality of education she received at UHSS surpassed what she might have found in major cities like Delhi, Bangalore, or Imphal.

Kharin Awungshi, the school’s Science topper, described the Principal as a father figure who pushed him to his limits. “Thank you, teachers, for igniting the beauty of science in me and for reviving the beauty of education in my heart,” Awungshi said. “UHSS is a name I will carry wherever I go.”
The program included various teachers offering words of encouragement and presenting awards and certificates to toppers to boost their morale for the journey ahead.
Principal Josiah reminded the outgoing students of the school motto, “Knowledge is Light,” urging them to act as ambassadors for Ukhrul and added, “Never lose hope, have a clear vision, and work hard. Your success today is just a beginning.”
