New Delhi, March 11: The 17th Tangkhul Katamnao Long, Delhi 2023 annual sports meet which began from March 8 concluded on March 11 after a hiatus of three years at Jawaharlal Nehru ground, New Delhi.
The closing ceremony of the sports meet of the Tangkhul community residing in the national capital was graced by K Timothy Zimik, IRS chief commissioner of income tax (Retd) Ministry of Finanace (Revenue) Governmnet of India. Apart from the matches played on the closing day, colorful pheichak (folk dance) performed by Kureno Delhi NCR, body building show presented by Kapingshang Benedict Kapai, Muscle Mania India 2017 and two times Mr. Delhi 2017 title holder, a rap number by Yarmipei Chiphang were some of the highlights.
Speaking at the closing event, the chief guest expressed his special gratitude to TKLD, its organizing committee, dignitaries and said it felt like a homecoming to be part of the programme. He recollected his time in Delhi when he was the last President of Tangkhul Naga Students Union before it dissolved it 1980’s. Timothy Zimik passionately talked about the Naga issue and discussed the Naga Framework Agreement with the GoI and the past atrocities committed by the Indian army under AFSPA. He talked about the Naga’s unique national principle with separate flag and constitution and appealed the audience to come together and join hands in the fight for its freedom, advocating the slogan “One People One Voice”.

Timothy Zimik then, talked about revenue sharing and rampant corruption in his home state, Manipur. He lamented how the annual budget of Manipur is disproportionally allocated, where 51 percent that rightfully belongs to the tribals are not being allocated. Criticizing the Chief Minister of Manipur, Biren’s War on Drugs should rather be a War on Corruption. He encouraged proper use of land and resources.
Lastly, saying that he came from a very poor family and worked his way through hard work and perseverance and that success is possible to anyone who works hard, he turned his attention to Tangkhul students to focus on their goals no matter what their economic background are.
TKLD president Yaorei Horam, in his speech extended his gratitude towards the chief guest Timothy Zimik, IRS (retd). He also conveyed his warm welcome and gratitude to all the Naga Student Union’s president, church leaders and elders present, and all the functionaries of the sports meet for their unyielding support and encouragement. “I could stand here and talk forever on how great of a work everyone has done this year,” said Yaorei.
It is worth noting that the 2023 sports meet will be Yaorei Horam’s last as the president of TKLD.
The opening ceremony on March 8 was graced by Dr. Rammathot Khongreiwo, Assistant Professor, Department of History, Lakshmibai College, University of Delhi (Former President TKLD) and Hibu Tamang IPS Jt. CP, Security SPUNER Delhi police (Nodal Officer).

According to TKLD and the organizing committee, ten unites (locality) competed in the annual sports meet this year. The closing day saw final football match between Chirag FC and Kisangarh FC. Kisangarh FC won the match by a tie breaker. Other games included Arm Wrestling (Men and Women), Tug of War (Men and Women), Badminton (Men and Women), 800 meter and 100 meter race (Men and Women), Basket ball (Men and Women), Volley ball (Men and Women), and Chess match for men.
The overall champion of the 17th annual TKLD sports meet 2023 went to Ashram unit. The organizer said that over 2600 Tagkhuls in Delhi attended the sports meet on the closing day.
TKLD and the organizing committee, while congratulated and thanked all the winners and participants said that their dedication, hard work, and sportsmanship made the event a huge success. It also expressed its heartfelt gratitude to all the elders, friends, individuals, well-wishers, organizations, business sponsors and SPUNER Delhi Police for the support and generous financial, material contributions for the success of the annual sports meet.
