Imphal: The Janata Dal (United), in a meeting of the party attended by its MLA-elects, has decided Saturday to extend its support in the formation of a new government by the BJP. The BJP secured absolute majority by winning 32 seats in the 60-member Manipur Legislative Assembly.
The JD(U) also elected Khumukcham Joykisan Singh as the leader of the legislature wing of the party and Ngursanglur Sanate as deputy leader.
The meeting in which some national leaders of the party including its national general secretary Afaque Ahmad Khan also elected Md Abdul Nasir as the chief whip of the party.
“In the interest of the people of Manipur, the JD (U) has decided to give support to the BJP in the formation of the government,” JD(U) said, in a press communiqué signed by its national office secretary Md Nisar.
“The JD (U) would like to appeal to the BJP to honour the mandate reposed in the party and fulfill the hopes and aspirations of the people”, it added.
In the recently held assembly elections, the BJP retained power by winning 32 seats in the 60-member assembly while by winning in six seats, the JD(U) emerged as the third largest party after NPP that won seven seats.
