Ukhrul, Aug 20: Minister Veterinary & Animal Husbandry and Transport, Khashim Vashum unveiled the incorporation certificate of Ukhrul Piggery Farmers Producer Organisation (UPFPO) at Town Hall, Ukhrul on Tuesday.
Speaking at the General Meeting of Ukhrul Piggery Farmers Producer Company Limited, Minister Khashim Vashum elaborated the importance of livestock insurance policies and its benefits to the farmers. The Manipur Legislative Assembly has passed a bill on Livestock insurance policy to compensate for the loss of animals to the farmers. According to him, According to him, the government will borne 80% the cost of livestock to reduce the burden on the farmers. In order to claim the insurance, the farmers must obtain certificates from the Veterinary Department.

He further stated that, Manipur Veterinary & Animal Husbandry Department will guarantee services in all districts including covering the remote villages and to achieve that Veterinary Mobile Vehicle Unit has been issued recently to all the districts. Farmers can dial 1962 emergency veterinary response number for information and service. The services will be available year round.
Khashim Vashum stressed on the importance of timely vaccination to prevent diseases and assured that sufficient vaccines have been stock in the Department for ensuring safety of livestock.
Meanwhile the Minister announced that slaughter houses installed with freezers will be constructed in five districts including Ukhrul district this year.

SDO of Ukhrul, Dingringam Kamei urge the producing farmers and the organization to pursue the Tangkhul indigenous pig (Haohok) for GI tag. According to him, Haohok tastes better than other breeds.
The Ukhrul Piggery Farmers Producer Company Limited was formed in May 2024 with an objective to empower local farmers through sustainable piggery farming practices, ensuring better productivity, access to markets, and enhanced income. UPFPO Co. Ltd is incorporated under the Ministry of Corporate Affairs, Government of India and over 700 piggery farmers have registered in the organization.
