Police commandos recovered arms and ammunition in Imphal East

Imphal: A cache of arms and ammunition was recovered during an operation in the fringe area of Imphal East district on Monday.

A police source said that the cache of arms and ammunition was intercepted during an operation by the police commandos attached to the Imphal East district police at Khundrakpam Mayai Leikai under Heingang police station this morning.

The recovered cache included one SMG carbine with three empty magazines, one 36 hand grenade with ring, one tube launcher, 16 INSAS LMG magazines, four INSAS Rifle gas cylinder capes, seven 7.62 SLR ammunition charger clips, 63 rounds of 9mm, three empty ammunition carrier boxes and six anti-riot shells.

The cache was found buried near a crematorium during the search operation.

During the search operation that started at 6 am and lasted till 7.30 am, police commandos raided as many as 70 houses and verified the occupants of houses.

However, no one was detained, a police source also said.

The police in strife-torn Manipur have been conducting joint operations with the state and central security forces to recover illegal arms and ammunition in the possession of civilians including those looted from the police and state security forces in the wake of ethnic clashes that erupted in the state on May 3 last.

Over 5,600 arms and around 6.5 lakh rounds of live ammunition of various types were looted during the peak of violence. 

However, police sources said that so far around 1,500 arms and 20,000 rounds of ammunition have been recovered so far in the search operations.
