NPMHR, KIM, NPF, Naga Hoho, ZSUM Joins in Condemning Brutal Killing of Athuan Abonmai

Stating that rule of law and justice must prevail to protect the sanctity of life, NPMHR stated that no justification will help salvage the dampened wound caused by the action of the perpetrators. Calling it "senseless actions."

The Naga Peoples Movement for Human Rights (NPMHR) condemning the kidnapping and brutal killing of Athuan Abonmai on September 22 at Tamenglong said it was pained at how torture and killing of civilians by both state and non-state actors has devastated our land and our homes, expressing its deep anguish and condolences.

Stating that rule of law and justice must prevail to protect the sanctity of life, NPMHR stated that no justification will help salvage the dampened wound caused by the action of the perpetrators. Calling it “senseless actions”, it added “Clearly, the gravity of the situation is beyond the reasoning capacity of the perpetrators, or simply, senseless actions does not matter to them. Because what matters to them is serving their vested interest. We are concerned how vested groups will politicize this tragedy to communalize and divide the people.”

Appealing to all sections of society to remain vigilant, NPMHR stated that, no amount of justification will exonerate what was done to Abonmai.

The apex body of the Kukis, the Kuki Inpi Manipur (KIM) condemning the brutal killing of Athuan Abonmai, former president and current advisor of Zeliangrong Baudi (Assam Manipur, and Nagaland) condoled the death and condemned the brutal killing in strongest term.

KIM stated that it was shocked to learn the death of Apou Athuan Abonmai while adding that he was kidnapped by suspected NSCN-IM from Tamenglong District Headquarters. While strongly condemning the alleged brutal killing of Athuan Abonmei, KIM urged the concerned authorities to book the culprits involved at the earliest.

Zeliangrong Students’ Union Manipur (ZSUM) while extending deepest sympathy to the bereaved family condemned the beastly killing of Athuan Abonmai, stated that it was shocked to witness such barbaric act. ZSUM mentioned, “Today we lost our great and dynamic multi-faceted leader who stood for truth and spoke for the people of Zeliangrong in particular.” It also acknowledged his contribution for Zeliangrong community. It then urged the government of Manipur and centre to investigate and punish the culprits at the earliest, appealing all the Zeliangrong and well wishers and loved ones to stand firmly until justice is delivered.

Naga Hoho, terming the incident a “cowardice act” strongly condemned the killing of Athuan Abonmai in Tamenglong district.

“While the Naga civil societies are struggling all these years for unity and reconciliation among the Nagas, it is disturbing and unfortunate to hear the news of fratricidal killing taking place within the Naga family,” Naga Hoho stated. It also mentioned that killing is not the answer nor solution to any disagreement, and as such, Naga Hoho pointed out that political group must not forget to respect the people’s sentiments to avoid killings, kidnapping or unnecessary harassment to the innocent public.

The Naga People’s Front in a condolence message Thursday said it share the pain and sorrow at the untimely passing of Athuan Abonmai. NPF stating that it will always remember his contribution to the party during his tenure, said that Athuan Abonmai worked tirelessly for the growth of the party as a member of the party, and as the general secretary from January 2013 to December 2014.
