Scientist from Manipur, Dr. Ningthoujiam Raghu Singh among ISRO Chandrayaan-3 Moon landing mission team

In one of India’s finest moments, the landing of Chandrayaan-3 successful soft-landing on the South pole of the Moon, creating history, Manipur state despite the ongoing conflict, in a breath of fresh air, welcomed the news of its own state scientist, Dr. Ningthoujam Raghu Singh among ISRO Chandrayaan-3 Moon landing mission team.

Dr Raghu Ningthoujam, son of N. Chaoba Singh and N. Yaimabi Devi from Thanga, Bishnupur district comes from a humble fishing family of Thanga Khwairakpam Leikai, which is situated in the hillocks surrounded by the Loktak Lake. He is an alumni of IISc Bangalore. He completed his Master in Physics (Gold medalist) from IIT-Guwahati, and graduated in Physics from DM College of Science Imphal. He joined ISRO as a Scientist C in 2006.

Ukhrul Times has learned that a Naga scientist Dr. Noel Mathiulungbo Chawang is also part of the successful Chandrayaan-3 successful soft-landing team. Dr. Noel Mathiulungbou Chawang is a Liangmei Naga from the Zeliangrong community who hails originally from Manipur’s Oklong, Senapati District, currently settled in Samzuiram Paren District Nagaland.

India has become the first country to have ever landed on the South-pole of the Moon, and the fourth country to land on the moon after USSR in 1966, USA 1966, China 2013 and now India in 2023.

“Target on spot”, said Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) as Chandrayaan-3 soft landed at 6:03 pm IST.

ISRO chief S Somanath while introducing his team after the successful landing on the Moon said, “I would like to take this opportunity to thank the people behind this mission.”

Chief minister of Manipur N Biren Singh took to Twitter and said, “It’s heartening to share that a scientist from Manipur, Dr. Raghu Ningthoujam, from Thanga, Bishnupur was part of the Chandrayaan moon landing mission. The setbacks we encounter from time to time cannot erase our 2000-year-old history. Regardless of the difficulty of the challenge, the people of Manipur will always bounce back stronger.”

Stating that the successful South pole Moon landing is a monumental accomplishment, N Biren Singh said the landing marks India as the pioneering nation to achieve this feat. “We’re immensely proud of this incredible achievement, and it is bound to inspire many young minds in the field of science and technology,” CM Biren added.

Notably, CJI DY Chandrachud on Chandrayaan-3’s successful landing said, “The success of the lunar mission places India in a select group of nations to have successfully achieved the landing on the lunar surface. It is more significant because India is the only nation to achieve the lunar landing on the south pole of the Moon.”

M. Asnikumar Singh, Chairman, Loktak Development Authority(LDA), Manipur speaking on the successful Chandrayaan-3 lunar mission was quoted, “It is an extremely proud moment for fellow Manipuris to see one of our own, Dr. Raghu Ningthoujam, scientist ISRO who is a key member of the successful Chandrayaan-3 lunar exploration mission. What is even more inspiring is that Dr. Raghu Ningthoujam, a who is a native of Thanga hails from a humble fishing family. It is a matter of immense pride for the fishing community of Manipur. He remains an inspiration to many of us. May he continue to shine.”
