The eleven day long help desk for online registration in the constituent colleges of DM University, organized by Dhanamanjuri University Tangkhul Katamnao Long Imphal (DMUTKLI) under the aegis of Tangkhul Katamnao Saklong (TKS), has successfully come to an end on Saturday with over 160 students turning up for the online registration.
DMUTKLI President, Themreishang AS Zimik in a press release Sunday, extended heartfelt gratitude to all well-wishers who supported and encouraged the initiative. The release specifically thanked Qr. IK Muivah, IGP, Manipur, Qr. Worthing Muivah, Advisor, TKLI and senior students’ leaders for the success.
The help desk was organized purposely to help Tangkhul students from Ukhrul and Kamjong districts who were desirous of seeking admission in DM University for pursuing various courses in different streams.
Under the initiative, two help desk counter were opened – one at TKS Office at Hamleikhong, Ukhrul and the other one at Nagaram Youth Club Office in Imphal.
The organisers said that some students did exceptionally well in Higher Secondary Examinations, 2021 by securing high percentage, but some were relatively poor which, they said, will be even impossible for them to secure admission in this highly competitive premier University.
For the last eleven days, the help desk essentially offered students meticulous counseling on academic activities in which we were able to bring out and explore the problems of quality standards and present-day education system specially in higher secondary and higher education system of Ukhrul and Kamjong districts. The problems of students mostly pointed towards the lack of infrastructural facilities and ununiform teaching methods and examinations systems. What we further draw out from them in our conversation was that some schools and colleges in these two districts were unable to maintain the minimum required standards thereby resulted to spoon – feeding, parrot – like learning, memorizing sentences and essay type answers without understanding the subject matter. Another major factor for educational backwardness in Ukhrul and Kamjong districts is the apathy of the state government. The state government and the officials at the helm of administration do not pay proper attention in whether the government higher secondary schools and colleges at Ukhrul and Kamjong districts are run the way they should.
DMUTKLI observed that, poverty, being the key factor, Tangkhul students are compelled to go outside the district specially in Imphal and Senapati districts for new and better educational institutions. This, it pointed out, clearly delineates Ukhrul and Kamjong districts students relatively lagging behind in terms of constructive higher educational institutions to meet the changing needs and demands of the students.
Under such circumstances, the urgent need of the hour is to relook into the quality standards, relevance and infrastructure of the higher education sector in our districts if we are to survive in this fast and competitive age, Themreishang AS Zimik said.
He also mentioned in the release that higher education is of vital importance to build knowledge – based society and most crucial indices of socio – economic development. The TKS since its inception, has been consistently championing the cause of the students’ community with great vigour and zeal to keep abreast with the changing needs of the time and soceity in terms of educational progress and development. The DMUTKLI, under the stewardship of TKS will continue to work in future to bring about quality education in our home districts and also make Tangkhul students a better citizen.
