Imphal: Union Home minister Amit Shah, who arrived in Imphal to take part in BJP election campaign in the poll-bound Manipur today, claimed that over 9,500 armed youths of different armed groups of the Northeast region have come to the “mainstream” so far. “Likewise, the Centre is trying to bring peace in the hill region of Manipur by holding peace talks with the Kuki militant groups currently under Suspension of Operation (SoO) with the Centre and state government.
The Union Home minister arrived in Imphal this afternoon. Soon after his arrival, the Union Home minister proceeded to Churachandpur district headquarters where he addressed a BJP election rally there.
In his address, Shah lauded the work done by the incumbent chief minister of Manipur for the “prevailing peace” in the state, while hitting out at the previous governments.
He said that the state was marred with terrorism, militancy and corruption during the “dark days” of the Congress rule. “It was after the formation of the BJP-led coalition government with N Biren Singh as chief minister that peace revisited the state,” the Union Home minister also said. “With the ushering in of peace, Manipur has seen the light of development in the last five years,” Shah claimed. “As a result of the hard work of the BJP-led NDA government at the Centre, peace has returned to not only in Manipur but also in the Northeast region of the country,” the Union minister further claimed.
He also said that the BJP will hold peace talks with the Kuki militant groups and will bring them to the mainstream if the saffron party is given the chance to form the next government.
After the party election rally, the Union minister also took part in the door to door campaign of the party candidates in the district.
Manipur chief minister N Biren Singh and Assam chief minister Himanta Biwas Sarma were among other leaders of the BJP who addressed the rally.
Later, the Union minister visited Kangpokpi district where he addressed another party election rally there.
In the evening Shah further held a door-to-door campaign in Yaiskul assembly constituency of Imphal where incumbent CAF&PD minister Thokchom Satyabrata Singh is in the fray seeking re-election.
