Ukhrul, Jan 25: A long overdue inspection of Imphal to Ukhrul road was finally conducted by the MLAs and the Ukhrul administrators on Wednesday.

Ukhrul MLA Ram Muivah IAS (Retd), Phungyar MLA Leishiyo Keishing, Ukhrul DC Krishna Kumar, SDO Ukhrul, NHIDCL Executive Director DS Chaodhury with his executives and sub contractor, inspected the NH-202 construction from Yaingangpokpi to Finch corner early morning on Wednesday.

Ram Muivah said, “Realizing the terrible condition of lifeline for Kamjong and Ukhrul district, chief minister N. Biren Singh conducted a meeting on this issue on Tuesday and on his advice we went to inspect the road early morning the next day”.

“NH-202, the road from Yainangpokpi to Ukhrul is one of the oldest highways in Manipur but we were all shocked and dismayed by the terrible condition of this road. The entire stretch was full of dust and travelling there, we were enveloped by dust”, Ukhrul MLA, Ram Muivah added.

Empathising the excruciating and torturous journey for the people of Kamjong and Ukhrul District, the officials questioned the NHIDCL as to why the work was awarded way back in 2018 and even after a lapse of four years not even a small stretch of road has been blacktopped.

“The Sub Contractor, NHIDCL has made wrong promises”, Ram Muivah said. All along the way, there were village chiefs and affected families complained of NHIDCL wrong measurement or wrong survey of their land, farm, fishery pond and more. However, the DC of Ukhrul reportedly said that it is beyond his jurisdiction now as he had notified and suitably advised the affected land owner to give their grievances to the arbitrator, who was recently appointed by the Government of Manipur.

Hoping that NHIDCL will keep their word and the black topping will start from January 28 as promised, Ram Muivah expressed his main concern that, in Manipur, given the heavy rain they should not miss the season for black topping especially from November to March when there is no rain. If they miss this season they will miss the whole year.

The MLAs and public officials inspected the hot mixed plant and stone crusher installed at TM Kasom and were at least happy for the installation.
