Ukhrul: The Tangkhul Katamnao long (TKS), the apex student body of the Tangkhul tribe on Thursday wrote to Dr. Himanta Biswas Sarma, Chairman NEDA Guwahati, demanding a cabinet minister for Ukhrul district.
The letter pointed out that Ukhrul district has been denied cabinet minister for the last 20 years by the Manipur State government (15 years by Congress led government and 5 years by the BJP led government) which TKS said amounted to “injustice and discrimination” of the people of Ukhrul.
The letter signed by Shimri Raising, president and Yuimi Vashum general secretary expressed disappointment and mentioned that Ukhrul district being the home district of two chief minister of the State, namely, Yangmaso Shaiza and Rishang Keishing, opinined that the district deserves a cabinet minister. The letter also reminded of the legendary Maj Bob Khathing MC, VC, Padmashri who was singularly instrumental in bringing Tawang to the Indian union on February 6, 1951.

TKS termed the non-appointment of cabinet minister for the last 20 years a “betrayal” by the state government of Manipur and “ignoring” the district.
“In the light of the above, the Tangkhul Katamnao Saklong kindly beseech justice for Ukhrul district and we urge you to suitably advice the State government of Manipur to select an MLA form Ukhrul as a cabinet minister in the council of ministers,” it concluded.
