Imphal, July 23: In a press statement issued by Control Room Operator, Arambai Tenggol (AT), GHQ Tuesday, describing themselves as a “socio-cultural organization,” AT expressed their surprise and disagreement with the NSCN-IM’s depiction of the ongoing violence in Manipur as a Meitei-Kuki-Zo ethnic conflict.

The NSCN-IM made this characterization in a press communiqué dated July 22, 2024.

Responding to to the NSCN-IM, the Arambai Tenggol firmly asserted that the violence should be viewed as the “aggression of Kuki refugees against the Meiteis, one of the indigenous peoples of Manipur.”

Arambai Tenggol also criticized the NSCN-IM’s interpretation, arguing that it overlooks the complex realities on the ground and misrepresents the nature of the aggression faced by the Meitei community. AT claimed that the current violence is an aggressive act by Kuki refugees against the indigenous Meiteis, rather than a broader ethnic conflict.

Over its identity, the AT described themselves as a “socio-cultural organization dedicated to preserving and protecting the social and cultural heritage of Manipur’s indigenous people,” adding that their “mission is to ensure the continuation of Manipur’s rich traditions, customs, and cultural and religious practices.”

The AT also pointed out the NSCN-IM’s apparent misunderstanding of the socio-cultural and religious context that led to the formation of Arambai Tenggol. They clarified that their organization emerged as a voluntary response to the need to protect and preserve the socio-cultural and religious heritage of Manipur’s indigenous people, particularly the Meiteis. Arambai Tenggol stressed that their formation was not instigated by any particular individual but was a collective effort born from shared concerns and aspirations.

Further, the AT recounted the sacrifices made by their members in defending the Meitei community against the backdrop of armed aggression by Kuki refugees. They expressed disappointment at being labeled as a “militant group” by the NSCN-IM, a characterization they believe misrepresents their mission and the sacrifices made by their members in protecting their community and cultural heritage.
