4 barack-type at Singhat PS Complex to be converted into detention centres for Myanmar nationals

Churachandpur: A team of the Manipur cabinet sub-committee on identification of illegal immigrants led by Tribal Affairs & Hills minister Letpao Haokip visited Singhat in Churachandpur District today to ascertain the exact number of Myanmar refugees and identify sites for shelter homes.

It may be mentioned that the Manipur Government had formed the state cabinet sub-committee to conduct the necessary survey for building temporary shelters to accommodate Myanmar nationals who are seeking refuge in Manipur in the wake of prevailing conflicts between the Myanmar army and resistance forces-People’s Defence Force, PDF.

Speaking on the sidelines, minister Letpao Haokip said four barracks inside the Singngat Police Station complex will be converted into detention centers. Each barrack type quarter can accommodate around 50 people.

Myanmar nationals who fled their country against the backdrop of the unrest there should be identified and kept in a shelter home. They will be provided food, lodging facilities and other basic amenities, including health care on humanitarian grounds. Identity cards should also be issued to them. They should be allowed to stay in the camp until normalcy returns to their home country or any order in this regard is made by the State or Central authority.

The cabinet sub-committee members minister Thounaojam Basantakumar and MinisterAwangbou Newmai, Home Commissioner, IGP Intelligence, SP Immigration, DC Churachandpur and District SP took part in the visit.

It may be mentioned that the sub-committee team has already surveyed Tengnoupal and Chandel districts to set up temporary homes for the displaced Myanmar nationals.
